Today we salute the memory of the exemplary teacher of yoga, Shri B.K.S. Iyengar, the man who introduced yoga to the world outside India and continued to spread the light of yoga all through his long and tireless life. Shri. Iyengar passed away on August 20, 2014 at the age of 95. Savista’s owners’ connection with Shri. Iyengar, and his teacher Shri. T. Krishnamacharya, goes back several decades.
Guruji gave fully of himself as a teacher. All he demanded in return was sustained practice, discipline and rigour. With these, he said, anyone could attain the goal of self realization for, ultimately, that inner journey is what yoga is all about. But even before achieving that, he promised, there would be
“an incremental experience of greater freedom as we discover ever more self control, sensitivity and awareness that permit us to live the life we aspire to, one of decency; clean honest human relations, goodwill and fellowship; trust; self reliance; joy in the fortune of others; and equanimity in the face of our own misfortunes” (see B.K.S.Iyengar, Light on Life; bksiyengar.com).
